Wrinkles are an inevitable part of the aging process, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with them. If you look in the mirror each morning and feel frustrated or disheartened by the fine lines and wrinkles you see, then it may be time to consider a minimally-invasive wrinkle treatment like Dysport. Dysport is a non-surgical injection that blocks nerve signals to certain facial muscles, softening the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The treatment can temporarily turn back time and help you feel more confident in your own skin. Doctors Plastic Surgery is excited to offer Dysport to men and women in Chicago and New York who are ready to look and feel more youthful and vibrant.
Dysport vs. Botox
Dysport and Botox are both botulinum toxin injections designed to treat “dynamic” fine lines and wrinkles in adults. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repetitive facial movements over time, like smiling, frowning, squinting, or smoking. Both treatments work by relaxing the muscles beneath the skin to smooth out lines and limit facial movements. Although neither treatment gets rid of existing wrinkles forever, they do make wrinkles less obvious for several months at a time. Patients who are looking for a non-invasive wrinkle treatment and have not had success with over-the-counter products may benefit from Dysport or Botox.
Dysport reduces the appearance of glabellar “frown” lines that impact the area between the eyebrows. Patients who opt for Dysport can expect to notice results after a couple of days. These results usually last for about three to four months. Dysport diffuses farther from the injection point than Botox, meaning fewer injections are needed to create optimal results.
Botox is used to treat forehead lines, crow’s feet, and glabellar lines. In most cases, Botox patients do not see their final results until at least a week or two after treatment. Botox can last up to six months but typically lasts three to four months on average.
At Doctors Plastic Surgery, we take the time to evaluate each patient’s needs and listen to their aesthetic concerns so that we know whether to recommend Dysport or Botox. Both treatments are effective, safe, and popular, and can be a great option for convenient anti-aging.
Ideal Candidates for Dysport
Ideal candidates for Dysport are adults who are in good health overall and would like to address dynamic wrinkles that are contributing to facial aging. Dysport injections can help men and women treat frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and skin bands on the neck. Patients who express interest in Dysport will be thoroughly evaluated so that our surgeon can determine whether the treatment is appropriate for their particular aesthetic goals. Patients who are pregnant, living with heart rhythm issues, or are allergic to any of the ingredients in Dysport are not eligible for treatment due to safety issues. In the event that our surgeons do not believe Dysport to be a viable treatment option for an individual patient, they will be happy to recommend an alternative solution.
What to Expect During a Dysport Consultation
Patients who would like to banish lines and wrinkles are encouraged to schedule a Dysport consultation at our offices in Chicago or New York. During a consultation, one of our surgeons meets with the patient one-on-one to examine their face, learn about their medical history, and understand their aesthetic goals. They will determine whether or not Dysport is the right treatment for the patient’s needs and share before-and-after pictures from real patients to illustrate typical results. The consultation is the perfect time for patients to ask questions and gain a greater understanding of how the procedure works and what they can expect if they choose to move forward with Dysport.
What Happens During Dysport Injections
Before a Dysport injection session begins, the surgeon will thoroughly clean the patient’s face with an antiseptic to prevent infection. If necessary, a topical numbing cream or local anesthetic will be used to reduce discomfort. Then, the surgeon will mark the injection sites. Finally, they will carefully inject Dysport into the muscles that are responsible for the unwanted wrinkles.
As soon as Dysport is injected, it will begin relaxing the targeted muscles by blocking neurotransmitters that would usually contract these facial muscles. Patients will still be able to express themselves after treatment, but the lines and wrinkles that would normally appear will be softened after the treatment has had time to work (typically within a few days). One session of Dysport injections usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete. Patients are welcome to combine these injections with other facial procedures such as skin resurfacing and dermal fillers for more comprehensive results.
Recovering from Dysport
Since Dysport is a non-invasive treatment, recovering from a session is quick and easy. After a Dysport treatment, patients are encouraged to remain upright for about four hours. If they experience any tiny bumps at the injection sites, they should disappear within a few hours. Any bruising and swelling can be reduced by icing the area.
In the event that patients experience headaches after treatment, they should refrain from using any medications containing aspirin. Instead, a cool compress and or Tylenol and Motrin are recommended.
Additionally, patients should refrain from vigorous physical activity for at least 24 hours after treatment and avoid manipulating the injection sites for 48 hours post-injection. We require all patients who received Dysport to schedule a follow-up appointment before they leave our office.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dysport
Is Dysport safe?
As long as you receive FDA-approved Dysport injections from a highly trained and experienced medical professional, treatments should be very safe. While Dysport is relatively new to the United States, it has been used in Europe with great success over the last 20 years.
What are the side effects of Dysport?
All treatments, including Dysport, involve some side effects. The good news is they only rarely occur. Mild bruising and temporary soreness are two of the most common side effects of Dysport. Other side effects include slight headaches and an allergic reaction that leads to flu-like symptoms or a rash. If you experience any unusual side effects, it’s important to inform our office right away.
Are Dysport injections painful?
Most patients who undergo Dysport injections report only a bit of discomfort that goes away quickly. Our surgeon will apply some ice to the target area prior to injection to help make the treatment as comfortable as possible.
How much Dysport is necessary?
The amount of Dysport that is necessary varies from patient to patient. Our surgeon will recommend the ideal amount of Dysport you need to achieve natural results. They will not use an excessive amount of the product as doing so can lead to a “frozen” look.
Will I need to take time off work if I receive Dysport treatments?
One of the major advantages of Dysport is the lack of downtime. Most patients return to work and other responsibilities immediately after they receive their injections.
Where is Dysport typically injected?
In most cases, Dysport is injected into the forehead, in the area between the eyes, and the area that surrounds the corners of the eyes, where crow’s feet often form. The chin and the corners of the mouth area are other less common injection sites.
How long do Dysport results last?
The amount of Dysport injected, your age and your skin type will determine how long Dysport results last. However, most patients enjoy results for three to six months. If you are interested in a more permanent solution to your aging concerns, simply let us know and we’ll recommend an alternative option.
How often can I receive Dysport injections?
We recommend that patients wait at least 90 days in between Dysport treatments. In the event that you decide to stop Dysport treatments, you will slowly return to the appearance you had prior to starting the injections.
Can I switch to Dysport if I’ve had Botox injections in the past?
Yes. Since Dysport is similar to Botox, these injections are nearly interchangeable. Since dosing is different between the two products, it is essential to visit a medical professional that understands and has experience with both products. If you have stopped responding to Botox for any reason, you may find that Dysport is the ideal solution.
