Breast Augmentation

Questions and Answers (FAQ)

Looking for answers about breast augmentation?

Here’s what our expert patient coordinators and Board Certified Plastic surgeons are asked the most:

How durable are breast augmentation implants?

Implants are extremely durable. The implants we use for breast augmentations are of the MENTOR brand and are completely insurable in the case of unforeseen situations or circumstances such as rupture, accidental wear, and tear replacement after a period of time.

How long do breast augmentation implants last?

On average, today's implants are designed to last more than a decade. In many cases, breast implants can remain in good shape for 20 years or more. However we recommend swapping them out every 10 years. Every patient is different, and the life of your implants will depend on your body and how you take care of your implants.

What happens if the breast augmentation implants rupture?

New age silicone implants do not leak because they are not made of liquid silicone. New age silicone implants are cohesive gels, comparable to a gummy bear. If a silicone implant ruptures, the shell will simply peel back but the silicone will not move and there would be no harm to the body. When a Saline implant ruptures, the saline solution will be absorbed by the body and be released in the urine. However, as the breast implant will fully deflate, it would be more of an urgent matter to replace it as it would look significantly different in size than the other implant that is still in place.

Where is the breast augmentation incision made?

For breast augmentation, our surgeons make the incision in the inframammary fold (along the breast fold underneath the breast). This incision is known to have the lowest risk factor for infection during breast augmentation.

How long is the recovery after a breast augmentation?

After a breast augmentation, most women return to work and light activity within one week. It is important that patients continue to not engage in strenuous activity and lifting anything over 5lbs for 6 weeks after surgery.

How soon after giving birth can I get a breast augmentation?

Patients can have breast surgery 6 months after they have finished breastfeeding/lactating.

Will a breast augmentation procedure affect me later if I decide to have children?

The implant is placed under the muscle subpectoral. Therefore, it will avoid the complications of future mammograms, and it will not completely alter the lactation for breastfeeding.

What is the difference between silicone and saline breast augmentations?

Silicone implants provide a more natural look and feel. Silicone is designed to mimic natural breast tissue so once it is in the body it is hard to tell where the implant starts as opposed to saline implants which have more of a bounce-back to them.

Saline implants are filled with a sterilized salt water solution. They often tend to provide a more augmented look and have a firmer feel to them.

Is a silicone or saline breast augmentation implant safer?

They are equally as safe.

How big of a breast augmentation should I get? Do I need to know the exact number of CC's and how will they fit me?

While the numbers of the CC in the implant is important, the surgeon will oblige to your proportional anatomy and will give you what your body can withhold. It is okay to request a voluptuous size so long as your body can withstand the weight and size. Otherwise, patient's chest size varies, and your surgeon is opting for the safest possible result.

Can I get the same size Breast Augmentation as my friend?

Breast augmentation is tailored to the individual. The best implant size for you may not the best solution for your friend. Your doctor takes into consideration your overall build, breast measurements, shoulder width, height, weight, and current breast size. Implant sizes do not translate into cup sizes. When your surgeon makes his/her assessment on your needs, they will recommend a range of sizes that fit those needs without going too large for your breast measurements. Staying within that range is essential for avoiding future complications.

What kind of bra do I need after my breast augmentation?

After surgery you are issued a surgical garment bra, and this will be your new best friend for the next few weeks. It is recommended to keep this bra in use for the first 3 months and you are more than welcome to wear it as long as you’d like after that. You are allowed to remove the bra for showering and if you need to wash it in the laundry.
